Kost Castle is located in the Bohemian Paradise surrounded by three valleys, about 18 kilometres from Jičín. It is one of the best preserved, most important and last of the medieval castles in the Czech Republic. Its origins date back to the middle of the 13th century. The first written mention dates back to 1349 in connection with Lord Beneš of Vartemberk who signed his name as Benessius de Costy, i.e., Beneš of the fortress or fortress. The name of the castle, Kost, is derived from this phrase. Over the centuries the castle changed hands among several owners, the last of which, Anna Maria dal Borgo Netolická, saw the castle confiscated in 1948. During the communist era, it served as a museum of Gothic and Renaissance art, only to be returned in restitution to Giovanni Kinski dal Borgo, Anna Maria’s elder son, after 1989. The castle offers visitors 4 sightseeing tours, during which they will admire the castle palaces, the Chapel of St. Anna, a medieval torture chamber and a black kitchen. Those who do not have much time can enjoy a shortened and, at the same time, wheelchair accessible tour. There is also the possibility to stay at Kost Castle in a suite on the ramparts.
